Growing Up with Cars: From Pep Boys to Purpose-Built Tesla Suspension Upgrades
Remember the Good Old Days?
For those of you who grew up loving cars, take a moment to reminisce with me—back to the days of walking into Pep Boys, browsing the aisles, and picking out parts that might work on your car. There wasn’t always a clear goal—just a desire to modify something, anything.
The result? A car slammed to the ground after cutting too many coils, fog lights that only worked by touching bare wires together, and mufflers that hung too low. The car neither handled well nor looked particularly great—but hey, it was ours.
Fast Forward: A New Way of Thinking
As we’ve matured (just a bit), I’ve become a firm believer in being intentional with upgrades—especially when it comes to Tesla suspension.
Before throwing parts at your car, it’s worth asking:
Is this a dedicated track car?
Will I be using it to pick up the kids?
Is it my partner’s grocery hauler?
Will it be a weekend canyon carver?
Our family road trip machine?
Your answers help define your build strategy—and prevent wasted time, money, and effort.
Why Your Tesla Suspension Setup Matters
Tesla suspension isn’t one-size-fits-all. It needs to match how you use your car. That’s why I always urge people to work with a performance shop that truly understands the Tesla platform.
Tell them your vision. You don’t have to accomplish everything at once, but each part you buy should move you in the right direction. Strategic upgrades make for better results.
A Real Example: Rear Toe Arms
We often get asked to install rear toe arms during coilover setups. But unless you’re chasing aggressive track alignment, Tesla’s factory rear toe arms already offer great adjustability for both street and light track use.
That money could be better spent on a more impactful upgrade that actually supports your goal.
